After 7 months of envisioning, designing, and constructing (and many trips to the Home Depot), the brand new Chicken Coup is open for business!!! My husband has built an amazing new coup for our chickens. They seem to be enjoying it. We were very happy and impressed to find an egg in the new egg boxes hours after they took up occupancy. We found another one the next morning! I was wondering how we were going to show them the new place to lay. They figured it out! Our smart girls.
We have been waiting until the new coop was finished to get some more chicks. We were planning on getting 2 or 3 more laying hens. We came home with 3 little babies. We think they are about 6 weeks old. Once again trial by fire. We have them in a dog kennel inside the new coop. When they are in the kennel they are safe from getting pecked by the older hens. When I let them out to explore the yard, our Border Collie takes very good care of them! She watches them, herds them, and chases the older chickens away when they come to peck them. It is awesome! I actually get a little nervous if the dog isn’t in the yard when I have the little ones out and the older ones start coming at them. They are NOT afraid of me like they are of the dog!
